Heraklion Port, it is one of the most important shipping ports. The port is divided into two parts, the old Venetian Harbor, which is only used for fishers and yachts nowadays, and the new Heraklion Ferry port, this is mainly used for travelers or cargo shipment.

The port was built in 1928 by Sir Robert McAlpine, which is an engineering construction company based in Hemel, Hampstead. Many tourists use this port when visiting Crete or depart from Crete to other destinations including Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Ios.

There are many direct ferries that travel to different islands, mainly during the summer season. There is a daily ferry that goes from the mainland, Piraeus to Heraklion port, and more frequent ferry trips in the summer. Heraklion Port can get quite busy, it is the third-busiest port in all of Greece. It serves approximately two million passengers and about 300,000 vehicles every year.

The main ferry that departs from Piraeus every day is Minoan Lines. The harbor is surrounded by many shops, cafeterias, and restaurants, so everything in close by.

Both harbors are based in the Centre of Heraklion, so they are easily accessed.

The Venetian Harbor is approximately 15 minutes from the city Centre. The Venetian Harbor is a tourist attraction, the pedestrian street leads from the Centre to Koules Fortress or Castello a Mare, ‘koules’ means fortress in Turkish, the castle was constructed in the early 13th Century when the Venetians conquered the town. The castle was built mainly to store food and military supplies.

Koules Fortress is enormous, with two levels that are used to guard the entrance of the port. This is a remarkable please to see the sunset and enjoy a beautiful relaxing stroll listening to the waves crashing during the hot summer nights.
