Crete has a balmy Mediterranean climate with a long hot summer and an average 13 hours’ sunshine every day in July. The best way to enjoy the weather is with a convertible car rental. In a soft-top you can soak up the sun and feel at one with the outdoors as you cruise around the island. And there’s lots to explore. Crete has over 1000km of coastline and roughly 100 beaches, as well as beautiful countryside, mountains, and fascinating historical sites. Hit the beach

If you like the idea of relaxing on Crete’s beaches, Finikodassos (which means ‘palm forest’) on the northeast coast is well worth a visit. Also known as Váï beach, nestled behind the long golden stretch of sand is Europe’s largest natural palm grove. Or if you’d rather be on the other side of the island, Pahiá Ámmos is probably the best beach on the southwest coast. The sea is shallow and there’s very little wind so it’s perfect for families.

Navigate the small country lanes

Or you could visit Falásarna in the northwest of Crete, which is known for its expanses of olive groves. Among them lies a 4km stretch of scenic coast where the stunning Falásarna beach extends over 1km. To get there you have to navigate small country lanes and it’s only possibly to reach it by car. What better way to arrive than in your convertible rental car?
