Information about Crete Heraklion Airport
Heraklion Airport, officially known as Heraklion International Airport N. Kazantzakis, was named after the Greek writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis.
The Airport was opened in March 1939, at that time it was entirely a piece of agricultural land, during the Second World War it was a site of the Battle of Heraklion especially during the Battle of Crete in 1941. At first, the airport only offered basic services. In 1947 the first terminal was built, Hellenic Airlines started its first flight in 1948, at that time serves had gone up, and the airport was able to provide serves to a total of 4000 people.
In 1953 the Airport saw a new construction which included the extension of runways to 1850 metres long. From 1957 onwards, the new Olympic Airways used the airport. Now Heraklion Airport not only supports domestic flights but as well as international flights from all over Europe mainly during the summer period.
Heraklion Airport is the main airport in Crete and the second busiest airport after Athens International Airport. The Airport is based near the district of Nea Alikarnassos, and it is only 5 km away from Heraklion City centre.
You can use local transport to get you to and from the airport, as the airport is very close to the centre, a taxi is very convenient, and it will only cost between 10 – 12 euros. Or you could use a bus served by KTEL or even better hire a car from our huge selection of rental vehicles.
At the moment there is a new Airport in Heraklion which is under contraction and should be ready to operate in the year 2025. It is situated 39 km in the South-East of the city of Kasteli. Once the airport is complete, it will replace Heraklion International Airport with the new Kasteli International Airport.
