Emergency information and useful numbers

Greece is one of the safest holiday destinations in the world and Crete has the lowest crime rate in Europe. A welcoming and friendly community, the people of Crete are honest and genuine but occasionally, as in all busy tourist destinations, there may be a risk of theft. Accidents can also happen while you’re away, so it pays to be prepared with the information you need.

Protect your valuables

To ensure you have a hassle-free holiday, make sure you pay attention to your valuables and keep them safe. When you go out and about, leave your passports, car rental documents, credit cards and excess cash in a safe and only take out with you the amount of money you are likely to need for your trip. If anything is stolen, call 100 for Police in an emergency or contact the local police on the numbers below.

What if you lose your travel documents or credit cards?

If your travel documents or car rental details are lost or stolen, you should contact the consulate and Rental car in Crete immediately. We always recommend that you carry a photocopy or scan of you passport and rental agreement with you and leave the original at your hotel or apartment for safekeeping.

The British Consulate can be found at Candia Tower, Thalita Street No 17, Agios Dimitrios Square or call on 2810- 224 012. If you lose your credit or debit cards, contact your bank or card issuer immediately to cancel your cards and arrange replacements.

Emergency numbers

Driving in a rental car in Crete can be different to the UK and we advise caution until you get used to the roads. With pedestrians, mopeds and sometimes impulsive drivers, accidents can happen. In the event of an accident, contact the rescue service on 166 or the police on 100. With extreme summer temperatures, you may witness a forest fire. In the event of any fire emergency, inform the fire brigade on 199 immediately. And should you require emergency medical assistance call 166.
