Crete’s beautiful beaches

With 1,000km of coastline to explore, Crete offers something for everyone. Georgioupolis – where three rivers meet

Georgioupolis is a popular resort right on the sea, close to the border with Rethymno and Chania. It is one of the most visited summer destinations in the northwest of Crete for travellers and locals alike. The 9km Georgioupolis beach is the main attraction of the area, with Kalyvaki beach on the other side of the river. Nearby Lake Kournas is also a popular excursion.

The wide sandy beach with large sand dunes and shallow water is great for a family day out and offers safe swimming in the sea, although the water is on the cooler side due to the rivers that flow into it.  With umbrellas for hire, showers and water sports facilities, it’s a great place for fun in the sun.

Triopetra – ‘three rocks’ beach

About 52km south of Rethymno, in the middle of the vast coastline of Akoumiani Gialia, lies one of Crete’s most impressive beaches. Named after the three big rocks, which protrude from the sea and can be seen for miles around, this beach is popular with locals because of its special rock formations. Promising a great adventure in your Crete rental car, an asphalt road leads onto a route through green olive groves at the foot of the Siderotas mountains. It’s ideal for nature lovers and holidaymakers seeking peace and quiet due to its beautiful landscapes, stunning sunsets and tranquil waters.

Plakias Crete’s widest beach

Plakias lies 36km south of Rethymno and boasts a long and wide bay. One of the most famous holiday resorts on the island, it welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The spacious Plakias beach extends east from the village and offers something for everyone. There are showers all along the beach and ample parking spaces, plus you’ll find plenty to do with beach volleyball courts and a range of bars, tavernas and hotels to visit.
